An entire city block transformed into a contemporary workplace and technology hub
About the building
IFM Investors and Wardle have renewed an entire city block, transforming the commercial tower and heritage buildings into a vibrant workplace, event space and technology hub, making it the first of many buildings within the new Tech Central precinct.
The 32-storey tower, built in 1991, occupies a rare whole-of-island site, and integrates a Presbyterian manse (1846), Sydney’s first purpose-built fire station (Downey & Clarke, 1857) and the original Australian Gaslight Company showroom (1922).
At ground level, the previously dark and unsophisticated interior is now warm, welcoming and textural. A large table anchors the lobby, which also provides small pockets of comfortable working zones and features a site-specific video artwork by Jacob Nash. A quiet “Sitting Room” adjacent to the lobby provides welcoming areas to work, meet and collaborate. A Wellness Studio enhances amenity for tenants, and a Sundeck introduces a new terrace space for curated activities, public art and informal meetings. The heritage-listed Australian Gaslight building, originally a showroom for new gas appliances, has been repurposed into the Collider, an event zone for workshops and functions.
On level 21, Wardle’s Sydney studio is an expression of the architecture firm’s culture of making and collaboration. Its large communal table comprises a series of smaller tables originally designed for an exhibition at the Heide Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne, and a set of distinctive easels designed for a photography exhibition now display current work for discussion.
The transformation of 477 on Pitt has also enhanced its sustainability. The base building has 100 per cent renewable energy, with solar panels, solar hot water and a rainwater tank. The project has a 5-star Indoor Environment NABERS rating, and the construction process with Buildcorp recycled 97 per cent of waste and involved the use of green low-carbon concrete.
