Architectus at 25 Martin Place
Architectus at 25 Martin Place
A multidisciplinary design studio within one of Harry Seidler’s modernist landmarks
About the building
Architectus is a multidisciplinary practice, with a team of architects, urban designers and planners, interior designers, landscape architects and digital specialists working across 13 studios in Australia and New Zealand. Its Sydney studio is an open, flexible space that accommodates up to 240 people in a neighbourhood model organised around project typologies. These day-to-day work settings include a collaboration hub, gathering places for large groups, a showcase space and workshopping zones.
The studio spans two levels of 25 Martin Place, a modernist tower designed by architect Harry Seidler in collaboration with engineer Pier Luigi Nervi in the 1970s. Formerly known as the MLC Centre, the tower has a gleaming white-quartz concrete finish and a distinctive orthogonal shape that reflects its floor plan. It was the world’s tallest reinforced-concrete office building upon its completion in 1977, and Sydney’s tallest office building from 1977 to 1992.
Seidler integrated generous public areas into the development to create open, usable space in the increasingly congested centre of the city. The tower itself occupies only 20 per cent of the large CBD site, with the rest given over to mainly public use. From 2021 to 2022, Dexus undertook a full refit of 25 Martin Place, engaging Woods Bagot and Harry Seidler & Associates to reinvigorate the split-level public plaza, multi-level retail precinct and Theatre Royal Sydney.
