Bundarra
A strikingly twisted landmark building adjoining a meticulously restored Victorian terrace
10am–4pm

About the building
Bundarra is a bold new building marking the eastern gateway to Surry Hills and is home to award-winning creative agency Howatson+Company. Designed by Smart Design Studio, Bundarra celebrates the interplay of old and new. Its dynamic twisted form is in contrast to the faithfully restored Victorian terrace it adjoins, while its solid brick base anchors it in the urban fabric of Surry Hills.
The taut and twisted geometry is achieved with angled zinc fins attached to a curved glass curtain wall. These fins screen views and control solar access, while allowing an abundance of light in and out, illuminating the prominent corner. Smart Design Studio meticulously restored the Victorian terrace, reconstructing the missing front verandahs based on photographic records.
The interior fit-out, designed by Those Architects, echoes and fuses the architectural language of the Victorian terrace and the contemporary building and is imprinted with Howatson+Company’s artistic vision. Open-plan workspaces on three levels of the modern addition foster collaboration and creativity, while meeting rooms housed within the terrace feature distinct colour schemes and complement the traditional architecture. The workspaces are enriched with artworks by prominent Australian artists.
