About the building
The City of Sydney Creative Studios brings creative disciplines together and provides affordable workspaces for creative professionals in the city. In 2014, the City developed and adopted its Creative City Cultural Policy and Action Plan, which identified the limited access to affordable, customised workspaces for creative practitioners and enterprises in Sydney as the most pressing challenge to sustainable creative practice in the city.
In 2022, the City of Sydney Creative Studios opened in the Greenland Centre – Sydney’s tallest residential tower – designed by BVN and Woods Bagot. The Greenland Centre comprises a new 40-storey tower constructed on top of the original 27-storey tower on the site, which was the former Sydney Water Board building constructed in the 1970s.
The Creative Studios wraps around the internal above-ground car park in the podium. The state-of-the-art facility includes two rehearsal spaces for performing arts, five recording studios and editing suites, visual art studios, workshop and screening rooms, office spaces and an artist-in-residence apartment. Sibling Architecture designed the cafe and community spaces throughout the studios, offering places for creatives and artists to gather.
The Creative Studios is managed by Brand X, a Sydney-based not-for-profit arts organisation and registered charity that has supported Sydney’s creative sector for 20 years. Sydney Open visitors can tour the studios across five floors of the building and see and meet the artists working in the spaces.
