About the building
Designed by architect Harry Seidler and completed in 1967, Australia Square is a pioneering work of postwar modernist architecture. The spherical concrete tower is renowned for its bold, geometric design and innovative engineering.
The building’s most notable feature is its large, open plaza and the striking dome, which is supported by an interlocking system of reinforced-concrete ribbed ceilings designed by Italian engineer and architect Pier Luigi Nervi. This approach allowed for expansive, column-free interior spaces while maintaining structural integrity.
The combination of Seidler’s modernist vision and Nervi’s engineering expertise helped push the boundaries of construction, making Australia Square an enduring symbol of mid-20th-century architecture.
Multidisciplinary design firm fjcstudiorecently relocated its studio to level 6 – the first elevated floor – of Australia Square. A reflection of fjcstudio’s values, the workplace is designed to support collaboration, continued learning, sharing methodologies and greater knowledge and transparency of its projects.
