About the building
The Burns Philp & Co Building was the Sydney office of Burns Philp, a major Australian shipping line and merchant that operated in the South Pacific. Completed in 1901, the Federation building was designed by Arthur Anderson of A L & G McCredie.
Finely designed and ornamented, the heritage-listed building has an elaborate sandstone exterior with arched openings, windows and vaulted entries. The intact interiors showcase the skills of local craftspeople in the decorative painted metal ceilings, timber partitioning, elaborate cast-iron columns, cedar joinery and polished stone finishes.
The building was sold in 1987 and has since served as commercial tenancies. In 2024, Good Luck Restaurant Lounge opened in the basement of the historic building, designed by Akin Atelier for Merivale. Capturing the spirit of 1970s underground dining in New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong, the restaurant has kitsch opulence and an unmistakable 1970s character overlaying the subterranean setting.
