Martinez at Quay Quarter Tower
Martinez at Quay Quarter Tower
A Mediterranean-inspired venue blending Riviera style with harbour views at the base of Sydney’s landmark upcycled tower
About the building
Martinez – named after the famous Hôtel Martinez in Cannes – is a restaurant, bar and terrace that combines the relaxed style of the French Riviera with the energy (and views) of Sydney Harbour. Drawing inspiration from France’s eclectic artist residencies, designer Emilie Delalande from Etic used colourful, handmade and textured elements for the Mediterranean-inspired restaurant.
The restaurant is in the ground lobby of Quay Quarter Tower – the 49-storey, 206-metre-tall tower that ‘upcycles’ the existing AMP Centre tower. Built in 1976, the original AMP Centre was reaching the end of its usable lifespan. Rather than tear it down and rebuild, the project team, which included architects AXN and BVN and structural engineers Arup, reused as much of the existing building as possible and set a lofty new standard for adaptive reuse in architecture.
Quay Quarter Tower retains more than 65 per cent of the original structure (beams, columns and slabs) and 95 per cent of the original core, resulting in an embodied carbon saving of 12,000 tonnes – the equivalent of 35,000 flights between Sydney and Melbourne. The tower now comprises five stacked and rotated cantilevered glass volumes that create light-filled atriums within the building while reducing the amount of direct sunlight entering the tower. At street level, the Quay Quarter precinct extends outwards into laneways, a food market hall, cafes, restaurants – including Martinez – and an acre of public green space.
